A gatefold card looks great and is actually a pretty simple card to make. They’re very popular for this reason and a great card to make to impress people with your crafting skills!
If you don’t know what a gatefold card is just check out the example below. It’s a simple concept though – the card opens up like a gate with two folded sides opening from the middle point outwards. The two sides then work nicely as a way for the card to stand up when displayed.
If you want to make your own gatefold card then follow the easy steps below:
- Begin with your chosen cardstock. The bigger the better as you’re going to be folding the two sides but the size isn’t that important.
- Next take the two ends of the card and fold them so they meet in the center. Personally we find marking the centre of the card easiest, as you then just have to fold the two ends into the middle. However you can also score and mark the quarter and three-quarter points of the card and fold from those. We’ve found that a bit trickier though. But it’s you’re choice, whichever works best for you.
- Ok, the basic framework of your gatefold card is done. It should have the two folded sides like the image at the top of the page. From this pont you can decorate it anyway you want. You’ve basically got a blank gatefold card to do with as you wish.
- You can cut some card a bit smaller than the gatefold and layer it on the two sides. Maybe add some embellishments or stamp the flaps.
Below are some great gatefold cards that should hopefully give you some ideas of what to do with your own handmade gatefold card. You can if course buy gatefold cardstock but it’s both more expensive than making your own and really, where’s the fun in that?
