Creative Lettering and Fonts for Card Making
Creative lettering by hand can be daunting, especially if you are working straight onto a card you have spent time on - one mistake and it's ruined! But, you have many lettering options: - Hand Lettering
- Fonts
- Printable Alphabets
- Dingbat Fonts
If you are hand lettering 'straight' onto a card, say on the inside, do not try to be too neat. The neater you try to be the worse it looks if you go wrong. Aim for a style that *looks* like its supposed to be all over the place :) However, for creative lettering on the outside, you might want to lightly draw pencil guides for you to work with: - Draw very light, parallel lines so that you get your height, positioning and angle right.
- Roughly 'sketch' your words so that you can go over them in pen when you're happy with how it looks, rubbing out any left over pencil marks (but DO use a very light pencil!)
If you are really unsure, don't write straight onto your card - make the written parts 3D instead by mounting onto your card. That way, even if you make a mistake or are not happy with the result, you can start again and nothing is lost apart from a small piece of card. If printable alphabets or fonts are more your thing,

Printable AlphabetsPrintable alphabets are often mistaken for fonts. Fonts are downloaded and installed on your computer so that you can use them in programmes. Alphabets on the other hand are (usually) sheets of letters that you print off, cut out, and embellish if you like, to make your words. Obviously, you can print these sheets as many times as you like making it very cost effective - and many times you can alter the colours in a graphics programme, making digital alphabets an even more attractive option!! This is just a small sample of the printable alphabets from one of my favourite digital craft suppliers... Amazing Value!!!
