3D Decoupage Instructions

3D Decoupage (Paper Tole) is one of the most popular card making techniques.

It involves creating 3D pictures from multiple copies of one image - individual elements are cut out and glued into layers to ‘build out’ the picture.

Craft Supplies for 3d Decoupage:

Decoupage sheets can be downloaded as printables and used as many times as you want, or bought from eBay (below), your local craft shops and you can even easily make your own.

Although there are specialist glues and tools available, for the purposes of card making the following will be fine:

  • 3D Foam Pads or Glue Dots
  • Embossing Tool
  • Scissors - curved tips are best, for better control and precision
  • Self-healing cutting mat and a craft knife

Beginner in Decoupage?

If you want an easy project to try, or if you have trouble cutting out fiddly bits and pieces, look for images which are...

  • Fairly simple
  • Well defined
  • With larger areas
  • Fewer elements to cut out

Tip: Hair, family photos and fur are difficult!

Instructions

a) Which bits do you cut out?

Many kits, or ‘step-by-step’ sheets, show you which parts of the image to cut and the order in which to place them, to build out your picture properly. However, with no instructions just look at your image to see how it would look in real life, e.g. which areas would normally stand out and which would remain in the background.

Look at the picture and ask yourself which parts would fit in...

  • the background
  • the middle ground
  • the foreground

b) Shaping the Paper

You make the 3D effect even better by using an embossing tool on a cut piece. Work on a firm surface, but with a bit of 'give' to it. Starting in the middle, gradually move outwards in circular movements, carefully stretching the paper to give a more raised appearance.

Die Cut Decoupage

If you don't fancy the idea of cutting out your decoupage pieces, you can give 'die cut' decoupage a try - everything is ready to just pop out of the sheet and apply to your project.
